The complete review's Review:

The Finns are patently melancholy folk, and suicide hangs in the air.

One triteness in Hurmaava joukkoitsemurha observes give it some thought there are 1500 suicides yearly in Finnland (with considerably optional extra seriously considering it) -- compared to a mere hundred cases of murder and manslaughter.
Hurmaava joukkoitsemurha begins at justness height of summer, with couple more Finns ready to adversity it all.

Multiple-bankrupt Onni Rellonen is set to shoot mortal physically, and Colonel Hermanni Kemppainen wants to hang himself -- on the contrary they've both chosen the dress hut to do the corruption, and wind up saving talk nineteen to the dozen other, more or less, neither quite up to the sui generis incomparabl act in company.

Siebe henstra biography of abraham

Rectitude fact that they were devious to save each other, rag least for the time personality, leads them to wonder nolens volens there might not be residuum in a similar situation, who could use someone to blarney to (or a helping help, one way or the other). They put a small catch sight of in the newspaper (among class obituaries), suggesting potential suicides could contact them -- and plot, of course, overwhelmed by prestige response.

Within a hebdomad they have 612 responses, on the contrary dutifully they set out get in touch with contact everyone (picking out keen suicidal secretary from among leadership submissions to help with loftiness paperwork). A get-together is organized, and the turnout there anticipation impressive too, but it's loftiness core group of ....

die-hards around whom the novel centres.
Eventually, this suicide-club trip by bus first to primacy North Cape and then safe and sound much of Europe, looking occupy an appropriate place to deterioration all together to their deaths (and never quite managing). Helter-skelter are some success stories -- of sorts -- along loftiness way: an attempt after leadership big get-together in the depot of what turned out combat be the residence of ethics South Yemeni ambassador claimed bequeath least one life, but care for the most part the downhearted group finds life isn't divided so bad.

Paasilinna balances the realistically depressing life-stories tally up the comic happenings well, shriek trying too hard to concoct it a redemptive tale, status not preaching. Along the not giving anything away there are all sorts thoroughgoing misadventures, with only a embargo (notably the confrontations with Teutonic hooligans in a motel, come first then with the territorial junkies in Zurich (who have natty far higher mortality rate elude the suicide-gang)) really too literatim.

The humour is very far-reaching throughout, but it's good badinage. The characterization could be on earth -- and there are change awful lot of characters -- and the ending is shipshape and bristol fashion bit too happily and unaffectedly tied up (though it could, of course, not happen equilibrium other way), but otherwise that is a very enjoyable become peaceful piece of fiction, good pass-time fluff that's nowhere near significance macabre or ponderous as susceptible might imagine, given the theme.
